The brewery Josef Greif was founded in 1848 in the Sattlertorstraße 18. Brewing was initially in the former communal brewery in the Wiesentstraße. In 1952, the brewing company was relocated to the Serlbacher Str. 10 outside the old town center, where Josef Greif had already acquired an ice house with a larger plot of land from the Schindler brewery in 1928 - located on the then existing Ludwig-Donau-Main canal. Here was the opportunity to build a new brewery building, which could be extended in the long term as needed. Also a new brewery restaurant was attached to the enterprise in the Serlbacher road. After the death of Josef Greif, before the completion of the new brewery, his widow, daughter and son-in-law Erwin Schuster, took over the business. Christian Schuster and his son, also brewmaster, are now running the business. With an annual output of approximately 20,000 hectoliters of beer, the brewery Josef Greif is currently the Forchheimer brewery with the largest production volume. However, as Christian Schuster emphasizes, the pure volume development is not decisive for the further operational success, but rather a healthy cost structure, which depends essentially on the investment in new technologies, as well as a high quality of the offered services. The beer in the bottles with the red mythical creature in the coat of arms can be found in many shops and beverage markets in the region and is of course also on the Greif's basement and some other beer cellars in Forchheimer Kellerwald drunk.
In recent years, the brewery Greif has received a number of awards with their various beers, such. Eg Worldbeer Award 2017, European Beer Star 2017, Craft Beer Award 2016.
A new highlight is the Hopfstar: The first Forchheimer "craft beer" is a natural Kellerbier. It is brewed according to old craftsmanship and cold-hopped with five different hop varieties, including Mandarina Bavaria hops and Ariana organic hops from Lilling in the Franconian Switzerland.
In the brewery restaurant you may bring your own snack! There is also a Bavarian bar. That is, the beer is tapped by hand from the peasant barrel.
